Black Mirror inspired static bikes

This idea is also being passed up within the council hopefully. :) When I watched Series 1 episode 2 of black mirror although it was a horrific vision of the future, at the same time I quite liked the idea of people being employed to ride static bikes to generate electricity. A colleague then mentioned about static bikes to produce electricity for the council and maybe we could do it on our lunch breaks? People pay  money to go to the gym but static electricity generating bikes could be a way for people to exercise for free and generate electricity for Bristol!

Of course the success of this idea is dependent on the level of take up.

Why the contribution is important

Because 1. the council is trying to reduce it's energy bills (reduced use of fossil fuels is a good thing)

2. The council wants to reduce it's costs including reducing it's energy bill.

3. People want to be fit and healthy but not everyone can afford a gym membership.

Great idea! I thought of a similar idea when I sweating like mad during a spin class. Let's do it and make gyms sign up too.

It might be helpful to know that we already have a static bike that was used as part of the Bristol solar city launch back in June. Interested residents could ride a bike and the electricity produced was then used to blend a milk shake. Please come along next time if you like and try it. However, I am not sure whether this will go beyond a demonstration project as the amount of electricty that you produce is minimal in comparison with what the energy demand of an organisation is.
The much more pressing issue in Bristol is insulating all of our building stock, we have for example over 65 000 properties in the city that are in need of solid wall insulation. This would significantly bring our energy demand down so that we would not have to produce it in the first instance and save people money.
