Local Produce Picnics

Have one weekend in the summer where families friends and neighbours are encouraged to organise a big picnic using locally grown or produced food, ie nothing from any of the big supermarkets. It could be linked with a campaign to enable local children and their families to grow the produce they would like to eat on that day, eg lettuces, strawberries etc. The picnics could be in the local parks and green spaces or be street parties with road closures to discourage the use of cars on that day.

Why the contribution is important

It would help local people appreciate the wealth of good locally grown and produced food. It would make the connection between the growing and consumption of food, ie food miles, supporting the local food economy, cookery skills It would be a sociable and fun thing to do and would help connect communities with their environment It would get people out in the fresh air - especially if there were road closures for street picnics

It sounds like a lovely idea but I doubt that one picnic a year is going to change bristol much.

Maybe not but if you tied it in with something like the Get Growing Weekend it would reinforce the message that local produce is out there and is good for you and the health and wealth of your community.
